“I’m suddenly feeling low…and I don’t know why.”
“I was fine, but I met this person, and now my back is hurting.”
“I don’t know why I feel tired.”
“I always feel horrible just before a natural calamity.”
Do any of these things sound familiar to you? Now make sure you are not feeling the pain or sadness etc because you are not well. Make sure with your doctor that all is well. And if you find out that all is well, but your energy seems to go up and down for no rhyme or reason, you might consider the possibility that you might be an “empath”.
What are empaths? Empaths are people who have this innate ability to feel other people’s emotions, thoughts, problems like they are their own. They often do not know the origin of the feeling or problem, but often pick up on other people’s energy, and start feeling like those people themselves.
1) An empath often suffers from chronic fatigue and all kinds of aches and pains without knowing a cause.
2) An empath often feels other people’s energies and the world energies so much that they tend to forget about their own feelings and needs.
3) An empath is very sensitive to media — news, TV, world events, violent movies & TV shows.
4) An empath might feel terribly low or depressed just before earthquakes or another large scale calamity.
5) People often feel like pouring out their woes to empaths.
6) An empath is often shy.
7) An empath often loves animals.
8) An empath feels much better in solitude (obviously, because other’s energies are not affecting them).
9) An empath always wants to do all they can to help others because they really feel what others are feeling (like it is actually happening to them).
10) An empath often cannot say no.
11) An empath often identifies themselves too closely with the characters of a movie, TV show, or book.
12) Empaths are often very compassionate and spiritual people. They truly do understand what “one-ness” means.
While empathy is a really useful psychic ability, and certainly useful for a healer so she/he will know how to help her/his client, empaths need to protect themselves because they often get bogged down with physical & emotional pain that is not even theirs. They seem to carry the weight of the world upon themselves.
Here are some tips for empaths to feel better:
1. Do not watch violent movies, TV shows etc.
2. Try to stay away from news. You are really not missing out on much.
3. Do this clearing and sheilding exercise:
A) Every morning, say emphatically, “Whatever is not my energy leave now!”.
B) Then imagine all thoughts, emotions, energies that are not yours, leaving you.
C) Wait a few seconds, and then in you mind or aloud, say this, “I call all of my energy back from all directions of space & time”
D) Then close your eyes and imagine little lights speeding to you and getting absorbed into you.
E) After that ask Archangel Michael to cut cords between you and everything and everyone else (don’t worry, bonds of love don’t get erased).
F) Now imagine/visualize/feel a spark of white light within your solar plexus growing and filling you and your aura with incredibly bright white light.
G) Imagine this for a few minutes, and then ask the light to clear away all energies that are harmful to you.
H) Next, imagine yourself filled and surrounded by white, pink or golden light (whatever you feel drawn towards).
I) Imagine this light enveloping you like a bubble. Instruct this light, “Let only energies of highest love enter you. Transmute upon contact any thought or energy that is negative, into highest love and send back to source of this energy”.
And you are done. With practice this should not take more than 3-5 minutes. Repeat this at night too before you sleep. And anytime you feel you are getting drowned by external emotions, energies repeat this.
Empathy is a beautiful gift because it makes you a compassionate person, you truly experience what one-ness is. But, you need to learn how to turn it off at will, and be able to clear your energy of all external influences.
If you feel you are an empath, and were feeling the negative effects of empathy like chronic fatigue, drowning in others’ sorrows and pains, always putting everyone else above you, and forgetting yourself in the process, then do this for a month very regularly and let me know how you feel. Write down now how you feel. Practice for a month. Come back and tell me here in comments how you feel now.

Thankyou for this article.My daughter is am empath and has been hurt alot but she understands what best helps as you mentioned.For me i always try to remain cheerful so she dosnt become more stressed.It is a beautiful gift sadly though the empath is used alot by others and really can forget themselves.Staying in the presant and focusing on what is good is the biggest survival tool and that has taken years for my daughter to master this.

I have written the steps to be done to turn it off at will. Once you learn it, you can do it in minutes.

Yes, everything under: “Here are some tips for empaths to feel better”. And the alphabetical list – that is the main exercise. I also use EFT tapping to help myself because I am a big time empath. Yesterday I was watching some silly TV show which would be mildly irritating to normal people. But I was getting really upset. So I did EFT tapping while watching so that I can watch these silly things without getting affected by them.

Oh me too! I get upset with Disney movies too. And I know the scene you are talking about from Lion King. I got very upset with that too. I saw the movie Troy…just a part of it when Prince Hector was killed, and I grieved for 6 months. 😀 So I definitely need this routine…and I totally get what you are saying. ((((hugs))))

It has been helpful to me when talking with someone about their woes to ACNKOWLEDGE THE CHRIST IN THEM and to say to myself that God’s grace is present for them in there being…just as He is there for everyONE. It can be hard to not try and “fix” problems but to remain steadfast in the knowledge that all that is needed is already received and remain Grateful for His ever present Grace!

I think it may also be the cause of unexplained feelings of euphoric happiness. I have had a lot of that lately. Just unbelievable happiness. I didn’t put it together until I read this. My daughter recently had her first baby and she is in a state of euphoric happiness. She has no pressure to get back to work and only takes care of herself and her new son. She is in ‘that’ zone. I have had this connection to different family members as long as I could remember. Mostly it has been only the bad. But lately I’m wondering if it is also the extremely good as well. I also don’t watch tv and limit my exposure to news to very little. I’m glad I read this and that you have put a name to it. A wise woman told me once when I was still a teen (I’m in my 50’s now) to use it to pray for others. Especially if a nightmare has a person I now in it and the pain is connected. Then pray for them. Pray fervently because they must be going through it. It helps to have a purpose for my pain. But usually I would get too occupied with my pain. It takes experience to separate myself and learn to use it as a tool. Thank you for the helpful list. I have not learned to turn it off so I’m glad to read that as well. Thank you.
Hanna, yes you absolutely can absorb and feel others’ beautiful feelings too. I do :). When something good happens to someone, I feel sooooo happy, as if it has happened to me! LOL! So that way it is really cool! In those cases we don’t need to turn this off. Might as well feel 100% happy with others :-D. Hugs!
The exercise resonated so well within me, than I do that believe myself able to speak at this moment. I can hardly type this. I just want to sit in the peace of this moment and enjoy my well”being.” Maybe I’m not an empath, but I do absorb negative energies quickly, awfully. Thanks for a method of cleansing them.

I had asked the Universe to send me the info on how to protect myself and to stop this drain .. oh yes I know who all these other people are who just come & dump on me… I have always wondered why they do that too. Absolutely, there can be extroverted empaths! The shyness is mostly from the fact that they feel better by themselves and so shy away from people often. There is no description that will be exact. These were general guidelines. 🙂

I am an Empath and have known this for many years now…..for that reason I do not buy newpapers, celeb mags, watch very little TV unless it is a ‘feel good’ movie (and then I still get overwhelmed with happiness for the persons concerned). I use my crystals and Arch Angel Michael to sever chords….mirrors to protect as above so below and ‘still’ I get afffect…..but more strangely since the start of the New Year…..(and the healing crisis of a firewalk) I have had this need to just ‘Sleep’ this is more than just the general fatigue and this time I find it really difficult to brush off and so have found myself to give way to it and when/where necessary I do just that….but feel exhausted after?……could you think of anything else I could possibly do…..I eat and drink healthily xxx
Tracey did you try the shielding, energy clearing, energy calling methods I wrote there? Try it in those exact steps for a while and let me know how you feel. Also make sure you let your doctor know as well. Hugs!

Thank you so much for this clarification!…99 % of my friends turn to me for advice with their problems and i tend to take everything they go through personally. Before you know it, i’ve calmed them down, solved their problems or talked them out of doing something that wasn’t beneficial to them and then i’m left carrying their burdens for them. This gets very tiring and stressful..I never understood why i always felt the need to solve everyone’s problems but now i have a better understanding and will try what you suggested..Thank you so much for your help

I have these symptoms’ exactly. I realise I am empathetic. I am exhausted by it. I wasn’t really aware until I read this article. thanks heaps. It gives me an idea that, now I can think more about myself treat myself as important too. instead of worrying about others all the time. Put myself first for a change. I hold all my worries in my shoulders so have much pain there. I’m going to do this test and look forward to being more relaxed.

Thank you Swati. I’ve been doing the exercises and I’m feeling better but still a lot of pain. I’m badly affected by weather change and here in Australia it’s summer so hot and humid!
Margaret, keep doing the exercises. If you feel better that means it is working on you. Do it twice a day, and also cut cords with weather changes. At first I was not getting much out of it either. I would feel a little better, but then later I’d be back to the same stuff. But I kept doing this, and over time, the cumulative effect seemed to help. Now it is not so bad at all! :-))
Thank you for those suggestions Swati. The weather is my biggest problem I’m sure – at the moment at least. It’s just so humid and between 28 and 40 deg c so sometimes hard to handle! I’ve been doing the exercises twice a day and at least I feel calmer. I have bad anxiety after anaphylaxis ( under medical supervision for that) that I am trying to control. So it all helps.

Love that you are putting this out. Being an empath also can make you feel amazing and you can feel love between people. Boundaries are the big issue. Thank you for this article! I have a hard time knowing what to do in this world and how to relate. I have turned the tv and the radio off, I work at a school and then I am drained with tons of aches and pains. I have very little contact with people exept for work, when I am online and those I happen to meet as I go about my day. I will test this list, but why are there empathy and what are we to do in this world?
Anna, empaths are the ones who can sense the real one-ness that is there within us. And they are able to help others very well because they understand truly how others feel. These are some of the beautiful things empaths are here to do in this world.
This is truly me. I never knew why I feel these things or had these issues. I’ve been like this for many years. In the past I’ve felt really weird before an earthquake and then theres one usually Within 24 hours. Pretty much everything you’ve described is absolutely me. I’m shocked actually. All I can say is wow.

my sister always tells me I’m too empathetic. I guess she hit it on the head. everything that was said in 11 signs that you’re an empath is true. people tell me I’m too good. I feel I need to help everybody all the time whether I know them or not. I’m bi-polar so I’ve been diagnosed and thought that’s why I’m so depressed so often but all the medications never seem to work. but I’m overwhelming happiest when I’m doing something, anything for someone else and lose myself in the process. I always put everyone before myself. I don’t feel I’m a good person. I just consider it doing “the right thing” or “what it is was in their place”. I see someone in need and it’s like a “whole scenario or video runs through my head at that instant saying “what if I did this for that person”? would this make a difference for them. or “I don’t have much, but I have more than them”. I have a very bad Ankle that needs to be replaced and I’m in constant terrible pain most of the time. but still I insist on running errands for people I know are unable to really do it themselves. or give money to homeless people even though I hardly have any money myself. it makes me so overjoyed at that moment, but then I suffer physically or monetarily later, but I just can’t control it. I just can’t “not” help people. it’s as if I have no free will. Sometimes I can hardly walk the pain is so bad. but if my 80 & 90 year old friends need something I must go, I can’t say no. I say “if I don’t, who will help them”? if they go themselves what if they fall or get hurt. I constantly volunteer to do things I’m either too tired, depressed or in pain to do. but I always put myself in their places & feel their needs in my head & heart and simply MUST do something to make things easier or better for them…. I’m so sorry. I’m rambling on to you. thank you. I feel like I have a brand new understanding about myself. can’t wait to read the books and practice your techniques to see if I can lighten & release the mental (and maybe physical) burdens that always overwhelmed me. thank you! sorry but something else you say is so true too. everybody comes to me with their problems! I can listen for as long as they need me too and see the solutions to their problems so clearly even before they finish what they have to say. I see the right thing for them to say or do & could even bet on the “this is the results or responses they’ll get” if they “say or do this” in my mind. I’ve taken tests that tell you what is the right career choice for me, and it’s usually either “physciatrist/therapist or social worker/home health aid” or something along those lines lol. im so good at taking care of others or sering the answers to their problems but can never seem to take care of myself! and i always, always have to have a per, cat/dog something furry to stroke or love. i have to, HAVE TO pet every, EVERY cat or dog i see in the street or someones house. and they always (except once or twice) in my life (im 56) respond so well to my touch. i get my face licked ALL the time and i LOVE IT! strangers apologize for their responses to me, jumping on me, licking me, rubbing all over me. i dont care if i get full of pet hair i just live their touch! i can feel the love coming out of them & it makez me so full of joy! its one of the best feelings in the world! i know exactly how to touch/stroke them in just the right areas & know exactly what their respinses will be to that petting or stroking on those areas of their bodies. one other thing Swati if you’re an empath, does it affect your sleeping? my brain won’t shut off at night. so many problems & things just run through my head all night. Sometimes I go for days without sleep worrying about this & that. I can take care of everybody or everything but I can’t seem to take care of myself. I end up isolating & when I try to get up & do something for myself in my apartment I get overwhelmed. I feel paralyzed. everything seems like it’s too much to handle. but in someone’s house I can do EVERYTHING for them. I have all the energy in the world & can take on the world! just not for myself…… 🙁 but then I don’t like to really accept help from others either.?? didn’t sleep all night again and it’s now 6:29am. 🙁 I know, shut up & try to sleep a little while right. I know this is me and have known since I was a little girl..
I am a empathy person all those things on that list described me.
I have always been able to feel others, as a child my mother said I was crazy! My mood can change drastically depending on the energy of a situation and I can almost sense when something is going to happen, good or bad. I find being around a lot of people physically exhausting, I can’t wait to try this exercise.
I have known I am empathic since I was about 20 something. I have only just recently stopped always trying to help everyone else I know, and am trying to learn on helping myself. Don’t get me wrong, things always have worked out for me, but I’m draining myself on people who no longer know how to be happy or appreciate. I’m happy to discover you, and oddly enough, purple is my fave color since I was s kid. Ty
